Djibouti has a population of around one million people, making it one of Africa’s least‑populated countries. The majority of citizens live in urban areas, with more than half residing in the capital, Djibouti City. The two largest ethnic groups are the Somali and the Afar, each with distinct languages and cultural traditions. French and Arabic are the official languages, reflecting the country’s colonial history and regional ties. Somali and Afar languages are widely spoken in daily life and community interactions. Djibouti also hosts immigrant and refugee populations from neighbouring countries, adding to its cultural diversity. This multicultural blend shapes the country’s social fabric and daily life.
