Djibouti’s economy is heavily based on services linked to its strategic maritime location at the entrance to the Red Sea. The Port of Djibouti and the modern Doraleh Container Terminal handle significant regional trade, especially servicing neighbouring landlocked Ethiopia. The country functions as a key transit and logistics hub for imports, exports, and reexports in the Horn of Africa. Trade, port services, and logistics contribute a major share of economic activity, reflecting Djibouti’s role as a gateway between Africa and Middle Eastern markets. Despite limited natural resources and arable land, the services sector remains resilient and central to economic growth. Foreign military bases hosted by countries such as the United States, France, China, and Japan also contribute financially and geopolitically. Efforts to diversify the economy include investments in telecommunications and other service industries.
