Ubud is deeply rooted in Balinese Hindu culture, so it helps to know a few social norms before you go. If you’re entering temples or attending ceremonies, it’s respectful to cover your shoulders and knees and sometimes wear a sarong if required. Balinese people appreciate politeness — greeting folks with a smile and saying “terima kasih” (thank you) goes a long way. Avoid walking around shirtless or in beachwear in town streets, since that’s usually not how locals dress outside of beaches. Don’t take photos of people or ceremonies without asking if it’s okay first, because some things are sacred. Being calm, respectful, and patient — especially in crowded areas like markets or traffic — makes your trip smoother. And a little effort to learn basic greetings in the local language always earns extra goodwill.
