What should I know before visiting Cheaha State Park?

Before you head up to Cheaha State Park, it’s smart to plan ahead for weather, water, and safety, because the elevation and forest terrain can change conditions quickly. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and layers — temperatures on the mountain can be cooler than down in town and storms can roll in fast. Rangers and local authorities recommend letting someone know what trail you’re hitting and when you expect to return, especially on longer hikes, because cell service is limited in parts of the park. Swimming and fishing at the lake are popular in spring and summer, but you’ll need your own gear, towels, and, for fishing, a valid Alabama state license if you’re 16 or older. If you’re rock climbing or rappelling, sign the waiver at the Mountain Store and only go if you have proper training or a guide. Remember that wildlife and natural hazards are part of the experience, and staying on marked trails helps protect both you and the environment. Finally, check park hours and seasonal closures before you go so you’re not turned away at the gate or miss an activity you were looking forward to.
