Mosul was under Islamic State control for years and suffered major battles and destruction before being liberated in 2017. Since then, huge parts of the city have been rebuilt by local workers and international groups like UNESCO. This includes restoring old mosques, churches and neighbourhoods that were damaged or destroyed. People have been returning to the city, homes are being fixed up, and life is coming back bit by bit. Some infrastructure like the airport is being rebuilt and hopes are high that this will boost travel and business. Even with all the work done, there’s still a long way to go before everything is fully normal again.
