Mosul has a ton of history and tons of famous places that attract attention from around the world. The Great Mosque of al-Nuri with its leaning minaret was a symbol of the city and has recently been rebuilt after destruction. It stood for nearly 850 years and is now open again following a big reconstruction project. There’s also Bash Tapia Castle, an old 12th-century fortress by the Tigris River. The Mosul Museum houses artifacts showing the region’s long past, and Khan al-Gumruk is a historic caravanserai from the Ottoman era. Many of these sites were damaged or destroyed in the recent war but restoration efforts are underway. You’ll also find traditional markets and old city areas that tell the story of Mosul’s past.
