Jalisco is one of the states most associated with classic Mexican culture and identity outside of Mexico. It’s the birthplace of tequila, which was first made from local agave plants around the town of Tequila. Mariachi music and charrería (a traditional horse-based sport) also come from this region, and they’ve become symbols of Mexican culture worldwide. The state’s traditions go back to pre-Spanish times and were influenced heavily during the colonial era. Guadalajara and other cities in Jalisco host museums, historic sites and festivals that showcase this heritage. Local handcrafts and folk art are still made in towns like Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, and you’ll find art markets full of ceramics and textiles. Even the food scene reflects a blend of old and new Mexican flavors that draw tourists from all over.
