When was the Alamodome built and why was it constructed?

The Alamodome was completed in 1993 after several years of planning and construction by the city of San Antonio. Building the stadium cost about $186 million at the time. City leaders wanted a large venue that could attract professional sports teams, major tournaments, and large concerts. It was also designed to boost tourism and economic activity in downtown San Antonio. For several years the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs used the stadium as their home arena. The city also hoped the stadium could eventually attract an NFL franchise, although that never happened. Even without an NFL team, the Alamodome has remained a major event center for the region.
