The level of detail and movement in the images surprised archaeologists when it was first discovered in 1940. Many experts call it the “Sistine Chapel of prehistory” because of its artistic quality and scale. The cave includes hundreds of paintings and engravings covering large sections of the walls and ceilings. It also gives insight into early human creativity, beliefs, and storytelling.
