Why was Lascaux Cave closed to visitors?

Lascaux Cave was closed because human presence began damaging the fragile prehistoric environment. After it opened to tourists, thousands of visitors each year changed the cave’s natural balance. Artificial lighting, carbon dioxide, and humidity caused harmful biological growth on the walls. Algae and fungi began forming, threatening the preservation of the paintings. Scientists realized that even careful tourism was too risky for such an ancient site. The cave was permanently closed in 1963 to stop further damage. Since then, strict conservation efforts have helped stabilize and protect what remains inside.
