The official language of Suriname is Dutch. It’s used in government, education, and media, making Suriname the only country in South America where Dutch is the main language. However, most people also speak Sranan Tongo, an English-based Creole used in everyday conversation. Other languages like Hindi (Sarnami), Javanese, and several Maroon and Indigenous tongues are also spoken. English is widely understood, especially in tourism and business. Most Surinamese people are multilingual and switch easily between languages. The country’s language mix shows its diverse cultural roots and colonial history.
