Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. German is the most widely spoken, especially in the central and eastern parts. French is used in the west, Italian in the south, and Romansh in a few southeastern valleys. Many Swiss people are multilingual, easily switching between two or more of these languages. English is also widely understood, especially in business and tourism. The country’s linguistic diversity reflects its unique cultural balance and regional independence. This multilingual setup is one of Switzerland’s most distinctive national traits.
