The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese, also known as Standard Chinese. It’s used in education, government, and media. Many Taiwanese people also speak Taiwanese Hokkien (often called “Taiwanese”) or Hakka, depending on their background. Indigenous languages are spoken by smaller groups in mountain and rural areas. English is taught in schools and becoming more common in business and tourism. Most people in Taiwan are bilingual or multilingual. The variety of languages adds depth to Taiwan’s culture and connects its modern society with deep historical roots.
