The official language of Togo is French. It’s used in schools, government, and media. However, most people speak local languages such as Ewe and Kabye in daily life. English and other regional African languages are also spoken by smaller groups. Many Togolese people are bilingual, switching between French and their mother tongue easily. French connects people from different ethnic backgrounds across the country. The linguistic diversity in Togo reflects its colorful culture and history as part of both West Africa and the Francophone world.
