How did George Washington become the first U.S. president?

After the Revolution, Washington was basically the most trusted public figure in the country. When the U.S. Constitution was created, people immediately wanted him to lead the new government. He didn’t even run a campaign — he was unanimously elected. Washington actually didn’t want political power, but he accepted because he felt responsible for the country’s future. As president, he focused on keeping the new nation stable and united. He created many basic government structures we still use. His presidency set the tone for how the role works today.
