Washington grew up in Virginia and spent most of his life as a farmer and landowner. He loved outdoor work, horseback riding, and taking care of Mount Vernon. He married Martha Custis, a wealthy widow, and helped raise her two children. People who visited him said he was polite but pretty reserved. Washington liked simple routines and wasn’t into showing off. He enjoyed quiet evenings with friends and family at his estate. Even after fame, he preferred the life of a gentleman farmer.
