Why did George Washington refuse a third term as president?

Washington stepped down because he believed presidents shouldn’t stay in power too long. He wanted the job to be something regular citizens could take on, not a lifetime role. He also felt tired after years of political stress and wanted to return home. Washington hoped his decision would prevent future leaders from acting like kings or rulers for life. His choice became a major tradition in U.S. politics. It eventually turned into the two-term limit we still have today. His retirement showed he valued democracy more than personal power.
