How did James Monroe become the fifth U.S. president?

Monroe had a long political résumé before becoming president, which made him a natural choice. He was a close ally of Madison and Jefferson, and people trusted his experience. When he ran, the country was calming down after the War of 1812. Monroe won easily because his party basically had no strong competition. His leadership style was friendly, approachable, and steady. Americans liked that he wasn’t interested in big political fights. His election marked the start of a more unified era in U.S. politics.
