How did Thomas Jefferson become the third U.S. president?

Jefferson had already been a governor, a diplomat, and the first secretary of state before running for president. He lost the first time to John Adams, but he tried again and won in a very close and messy election. Back then, politics were extremely heated between rival parties. The tie in the election had to be decided by the House of Representatives. Jefferson eventually came out on top and took office in 1801. His victory shifted power away from the Federalists. It also showed that peaceful transfers of power could actually work in the new nation.
