What role did Jefferson play in writing the Declaration of Independence?

Jefferson was chosen to draft the document because he was known for being a strong writer. He pulled together the colonies’ frustrations and turned them into a clear argument for independence. Even though Congress edited some parts, most of his ideas stayed. His writing style made the Declaration easy to understand but powerful at the same time. Jefferson wanted to show why the colonies had no choice but to break away. The document basically became America’s mission statement. It’s still quoted all the time today.
