Madison was reserved, thoughtful, and pretty introverted, unlike many other early presidents. He was small in stature but huge in intellect. His wife Dolley Madison, however, was the social star of Washington. Together they balanced each other out — he handled ideas, she handled people. Madison loved reading, studying languages, and debating political theory. He preferred quiet evenings and good conversations over big crowds. People close to him said he was kind, patient, and surprisingly warm once he opened up.
