What was the Monroe Doctrine and why was it a big deal?

The Monroe Doctrine basically told European countries to stay out of the Americas and stop trying to control new nations in the Western Hemisphere. Monroe warned that any attempt to interfere would be seen as a threat to the U.S. It was a bold statement for such a young country. Even though America wasn’t super powerful yet, the doctrine set a clear boundary. Over time it became a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy. Leaders referenced it for generations whenever Europe tried to get involved. Monroe’s message shaped how the U.S. viewed its place in the world.
