Who was James Monroe and why is he an important figure in U.S. history?

James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States and one of the last leaders from the generation that fought in the Revolution. He’s best known for the Monroe Doctrine, a major foreign policy message still talked about today. Monroe was a calm, steady leader who tried to keep the country growing without too much drama. Before becoming president, he served as a soldier, senator, governor, diplomat, and secretary of state. He played a big part in shaping early American expansion. Monroe’s time in office is remembered as peaceful and optimistic. People often call it the “Era of Good Feelings.”
