Why did John Adams only serve one term as president?

Adams lost re-election mainly because the country was deeply divided politically. The Alien and Sedition Acts damaged his reputation, and many voters didn’t like how he handled party conflicts. Jefferson’s supporters ran a strong campaign against him. Adams also wasn’t great at political messaging or playing the popularity game. He made decisions based on principles rather than winning people over. Even though he lost, historians now see many of his choices as smart and long-term focused. His single term still left a big mark on early U.S. politics.
