Why is James Madison called the “Father of the Constitution”?

Madison earned that nickname because he played a major role in planning, writing, and defending the Constitution. He spent months preparing ideas before the convention even started. During the debates, he worked nonstop to build agreements between very different states. Madison also helped create the Bill of Rights after realizing people needed clearer protections. His writings became the go-to explanation for how the government should function. Even if he didn’t do it alone, his influence was everywhere. That’s why people still use the nickname today.
