Fun facts about the Large Hadron Collider

The LHC is cold—colder than outer space—with magnets cooled to -271.3°C (1.9 K), just above absolute zero. It accelerates particles to 99.9999991% of the speed of light. Each proton beam has the energy of a high-speed train and can circulate the 27 km ring over 11,000 times per second. More than 10,000 scientists and engineers from over 100 countries work on LHC-related research. It can generate up to 1 billion particle collisions per second during peak operations. The LHC has also inspired pop culture references in movies, books, and even a rap song created by CERN physicists!
