The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, located at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) near Geneva, Switzerland. It was built to explore fundamental questions in physics by smashing subatomic particles together at near light speeds. The LHC consists of a 27-kilometer (17-mile) ring of superconducting magnets housed in a tunnel beneath the Franco-Swiss border. Scientists use the collider to recreate conditions similar to those just after the Big Bang. The LHC allows physicists to test theories about the fundamental forces and particles of the universe.
