The Higgs boson is a fundamental particle associated with the Higgs field, which gives mass to other particles in the universe. Its existence was theorized in the 1960s, but it remained unproven until 2012, when experiments at the LHC confirmed its discovery. Finding the Higgs boson was a major triumph for the Standard Model of physics and helped explain a key mechanism in how the universe works. Without the Higgs field, particles would have no mass, and matter as we know it could not exist. The discovery also earned Peter Higgs and François Englert the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013.
