Where is the LHC located and how big is it?

The LHC is located underground near Geneva, Switzerland, spanning the border between Switzerland and France. Its circular tunnel has a circumference of 27 kilometers (about 17 miles) and lies roughly 100 meters (328 feet) below the surface. The facility includes several detectors—ATLAS, CMS, ALICE, and LHCb—each designed to observe different types of particle interactions. The massive size and complexity of the collider reflect the ambitious nature of its scientific goals. It is operated by CERN, which is a collaboration of 23 member states and dozens of partner countries.
