The Mekong River is the 12th longest river in the world and the 3rd longest in Asia.
It’s home to the giant Mekong catfish, one of the biggest freshwater fish on Earth.
The river supports over 60 million people across six countries.
The Mekong Delta in Vietnam produces more than half of the country’s rice.
During the rainy season, parts of the river can actually flow backward in Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake.
It’s one of the most biodiverse rivers in the world, second only to the Amazon.
The name “Mekong” comes from “Mae Nam Khong,” which means “Mother of Water” in Thai and Lao.
Fishing along the Mekong is worth billions of dollars every year to local economies.
