LBJ became president in 1963 after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. As vice president, he was next in the line of succession, so he was sworn in quickly on Air Force One. Many Americans were still in shock, but Johnson tried to reassure the country and keep Kennedy’s major policies on track. He used his political experience to push Congress to pass key civil rights and economic laws. In 1964 he won the presidency in a landslide election. Even though he wasn’t as glamorous as JFK, people respected his ability to get things done. It was one of the most dramatic transitions in American history.
