The Vietnam War became the biggest challenge of LBJ’s presidency and overshadowed much of his domestic successes. He increased U.S. involvement because he thought it was necessary to stop the spread of communism. But as the war dragged on, public support dropped sharply and protests grew across the country. Johnson struggled to balance military advice, political pressure and public opinion. The conflict deeply stressed him, and he often felt trapped by the situation. By 1968, the war had divided the nation. It became one of the main reasons he chose not to run for another term.
