Lyndon B. Johnson, often called LBJ, was the 36th president of the United States and took office after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. People mostly remember him for pushing huge social programmes called the Great Society, which aimed to fight poverty and racial inequality. He also signed major civil rights laws that changed the country in a big way. Even though he came from a modest Texas family, he built a powerful political career. Many Americans still debate his legacy because of the Vietnam War. Johnson tried to balance reform at home with conflict abroad. His presidency is seen as one of the most transformative and complicated in U.S. history.
