LBJ grew up in a rural part of Texas in a hardworking but not wealthy family. His parents were of mainly English and some German ancestry, and they emphasised education and public service. Johnson often said that growing up around poverty shaped the policies he later pushed in Washington. He married Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Taylor, who was a strong supporter of his political life. Together they had two daughters, Lynda and Luci. The family stayed very close even during intense political years. Johnson’s Texas roots stayed a huge part of his identity throughout his career.
