What is the Dream Stele at the Great Sphinx?

The Dream Stele is a large granite inscription located between the paws of the Great Sphinx. It was erected by Pharaoh Thutmose IV during the Eighteenth Dynasty. The inscription tells of a dream in which the Sphinx promised Thutmose kingship if he cleared away the sand covering it. The stele documents the excavation and restoration undertaken by the pharaoh. It provides historical context about the later use of the Sphinx and its continuing importance. The Dream Stele is an important artefact that links the Sphinx to Egyptian religious beliefs and royal authority. Today, it remains a key feature visited by tourists on the Giza Plateau.
