The Great Sphinx of Giza is a monumental limestone statue carved from the bedrock of the Giza Plateau. It depicts a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human wearing a royal headdress. This combination symbolises strength and wisdom and may have represented divine protection. At about 73 metres long and 20 metres high, it is one of the largest and oldest monumental sculptures in the world. The Sphinx is closely associated with ancient Egyptian religion and kingship, often seen as guarding the necropolis. Despite erosion and damage over the centuries, the iconic outline and features remain recognisable. Its enduring image has made it a symbol of ancient Egypt around the globe.
