The nose of the Great Sphinx is famously absent, and its loss has been explained in several ways. Historical records indicate it was destroyed long before modern times, contrary to myths about Napoleon’s troops. Arab historians suggest the damage occurred during medieval iconoclasm. Natural erosion over thousands of years also contributed to the statue’s worn appearance. The absence of the nose is now one of its most recognisable features. Despite this damage, the Sphinx’s overall form and majesty remain impressive. Conservation efforts continue to preserve what remains of its delicate features.
