The Titanic wreck sits about 12,500 feet (around 3,800 meters) below the ocean’s surface. At this depth the environment is extremely dark, cold, and under intense pressure that can crush most equipment. Water temperatures are usually just above freezing, typically around 34 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit. Because sunlight never reaches this level, the wreck lies in what scientists call the bathypelagic or “midnight” zone of the ocean. The huge pressure and darkness make it very difficult and expensive for submersibles to reach the site. Even modern expeditions need specialized deep-sea vehicles that can survive these extreme conditions. This is one reason the Titanic remained undiscovered for more than 70 years after it sank.
