The Titanic wreck is located hundreds of miles from the nearest land, which is the island of Newfoundland in eastern Canada. The site is roughly 370 to 400 miles southeast of the Newfoundland coast. It is also around 715 miles from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and more than 1,200 miles from New York City. Because the wreck lies so far offshore, reaching it requires large research ships and deep-sea submersibles. The remote location also helped keep the wreck hidden until the 1980s. Today, only a small number of scientific and exploration missions visit the area. Its isolation has helped preserve parts of the ship on the ocean floor.
