The wreck of the Titanic was discovered on September 1, 1985, more than 73 years after the ship sank. The discovery was made by a joint French-American expedition led by oceanographer Robert Ballard and engineer Jean-Louis Michel. Their team used a remotely operated vehicle and deep-sea cameras to scan the ocean floor. They first spotted a massive boiler from the ship, which confirmed they had found the legendary wreck. Soon after, the team located the bow section resting on the seabed. The discovery shocked the world and renewed global interest in the Titanic story. Since then, many expeditions have documented and mapped the wreck in detail.
