Yes, scientists believe the Titanic wreck is slowly deteriorating on the ocean floor. Special bacteria known as “rusticles” feed on the iron in the ship’s steel structure and gradually break it down. These microbes create rust-like formations that slowly consume the metal. Ocean currents, saltwater corrosion, and deep-sea organisms also contribute to the wreck’s decay. Researchers estimate that large sections of the ship could collapse in the future as the structure weakens. Even so, parts of the wreck are still recognizable more than a century after the disaster. Scientists continue to study the site before more of it disappears into the ocean floor.
