The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on April 15, 1912. The wreck lies about 325 nautical miles south-southeast of Newfoundland, Canada, in very deep water far from land. The approximate coordinates of the wreck site are 41°43′57″ north latitude and 49°56′49″ west longitude. This location is in a remote part of the ocean near the Grand Banks, an area known for cold waters and frequent icebergs. The ship actually sank slightly away from the position that was reported in its distress calls because navigation methods in 1912 were not perfectly precise. Today, the site is considered a historic underwater memorial for the more than 1,500 people who died in the disaster. Because of its historical importance, the wreck area is protected by international agreements.
